Flea and Tick Control Products:

In our area, we recommend applying flea and tick products starting in March and use once monthly for 4 months. Then can go to every other month unless in heavy flea and tick area, then use monthly.

Topicals: applied to skin over shoulders.

Frontline Plus: Kills fleas, flea eggs and ticks. Works best if applied monthly. In low flea areas can be applied every 3 months but not as effective . Can be used as early as 8 weeks of age. Does not wash off. Can be used on cats also . Active ingredients are fipronil and (S) methoprene.

Revolution: Kills adult fleas and prevents flea eggs from hatching, treats and controls ear mites, sarcoptic mange (scabies) and the American dog tick. It also prevents heartworms. Can be used as early as 6 weeks of age in puppies and kittens. Used on dogs and cats. Applied monthly. Active ingredient is selamectin.

Flea Control Products: do not kill ticks or mites

Topicals: applied to skin between shoulder blades once monthly.

Advantage: excellent for killing fleas. Can be used on puppies 7 weeks of age and older and kittens 8 weeks of age and older. Should be applied monthly to skin between shoulder blades. Active ingredient is imidacloprid.

Oral meds: given once monthly by mouth

Sentinel: oral tablet. Controls fleas through sterilization but does not kill adult fleas. Also controls heartworms, adult hookworms, removes and controls adult roundworms and whip- worms. Good for use in areas where influx of adult fleas from other animals not a problem. Approved for use in dogs. Approval for use in cats pending. Active ingredients are milbemycin oxime and lufenuron. May need topical flea control, such as Advantage, especially in late summer and fall.

Program: oral tablet used in dogs and cats. Controls flea population by breaking the flea life cycle at egg level. Does not kill adult fleas. Should be given with food. Also controls ringworm infestation (a skin fungus) in cats. Active ingredient is lufenuron. May need topical in addition especially in the late summer.
