Heartworm Prevention and Control: Heartworms are carried by mosquitoes. In the South, we recommend year round prevention for all dogs. Currently we recommend heartworm prevention in cats that go outside . Inside cats that never go out and in areas where mosquitoes do not come into the house do not generally need monthly prevention. In general, we recommend starting puppies on a heartworm preventive between 10 - 14 weeks of age. Any dog 6 months of age and older should have a blood test run prior to starting a preventive. Currently annual blood tests are recommended for dogs even if on a heartworm prevention. Dogs may not swallow the tablet, owners may forget to give it and stomach and intestinal infections may prevent or reduce absorption and interfere with control. Most veterinary facilities require an annual heartworm test (blood sample) prior to refilling a prescription. Sometimes this requirement is extended to every two years if the medical record indicates strict compliance with heartworm prevention as indicated by timely purchases and the owner is certain not to have missed any months. Currently, for interstate pharmacies, the requirement is an annual blood test prior to prescription renewal to comply with state and federal FDA requirements. The interval for heartworm testing may change if the Veterinary Medical Heartworm Symposium committee issues a recommendation and it is approved by the AVMA. Newest product is Pro-heart injection.
