Heartworm Prevention & Control

CATS

Cats are susceptible to heartworms but less so than dogs. Their immune systems mount an attack against the microfilaria but some do get through and mature in the heart of cats resulting in serious disease. It is recommended that all cats both indoor and outdoor be kept on a heartworm preventive as a recent study showed that a high percentage of all cats had antibodies to heartworms indicating exposure. The following give the youngest age to start and the smallest weight.

Topical heartworm, flea, ear mite, roundworm and hookworm preventives:

Advantage multi: imidacloprid, moxidectin: 9 wks, 2 pounds; topical monthly applied to skin on back of neck.
Revolution: Selamectin: 8 wks: applied to skin on back of neck monthly.

Oral heartworm and intestinal parasite preventives: not fleas

Interceptor Flavor Tabs: 6 wks, 1.5 pounds: milbemycin oxime: heartworms, roundworms and hookworms. Given monthly
Heartgard Chewables: ivermectin: 6 wks: prevents heartworms and hookworms Given monthly.

DOGS

                            NO ONE PREVENTATIVE GETS ALL PARASITES,

                            ALWAYS CHECK THE AGE TO START AND SAFETY IN BREEDING DOGS AND DOGS ON ANY OTHER MEDICATIONS,
                            TO INSURE NO CONTRA-INDICATIONS, ALL ARE GIVEN ORALLY OR APPLIED TO SKIN MONTHLY

Heartworms and Intestinal Parasites:

Interceptor: milbemycin oxime - 4 wks/2 pounds - oral tablet - monthly Prevents heartworms , roundworms , hookworms , whipworms - best in this category because only one that controls whipworms Iverhart Max: ivermectin, pyrantel pamoate, praziquantel - 8 weeks - oral tablet. Prevents heartworms, roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Does not get whipworms
Heartgard Plus: Ivermectin, Pyrantel - 6 wks - heartworms, roundworms and hookworms; does not prevent whipworms or tapeworms

Heartworms, Fleas and Intestinal Parasites:

Trifexis: spinosad, milbemycin oxide: 8 wks, 5 #: Prevents heartworms, kills fleas, prevents and treats hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms. Monthly tablet
Advantage Multi: imidacloprid, moxidectin: 7 wks, 3 #: Topical monthly. Kills fleas, prevents heartworms, prevents and treats roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.
Sentinel Flavor tabs: milbemycin oxime, lufenuron: 4 wks, 2 #. Prevents heartworms, controls fleas through sterilization, prevents and controls hookworms, roundworms and whipworms.

Revolution: Selamectin - 6wks - Topical Monthly - Prevents heartworms, Kills fleas and ticks, scabies and lice
