Flea & Tick Control

FLEA AND TICK PREVENTION FOR CATS:
Once a pet has
fleas, it is necessary to treat the pet once monthly
for 4 months in a row to kill
them out of the house.
Treatment of the house may also
be necessary.
Siphotrol Plus ll Premise Spray is an excellent product for treating the house.
Siphotrol foggers are also helpful.
TOPICALS:
applied monthly
to skin on back of neck by parting hair.
Do not apply behind front of shoulders
as cats can lick it off.
Fleas Only
Advantage II: imidacloprid, pyriproxyfen - earliest age to apply : 8 weeks of age
Fleas, Ticks and Chewing Lice:
Frontline Plus for Cats: fipronil, (s)-methoprene - 8 wks of age to start 
Fleas, Ear Mites, Roundworms, Hookworms, and Heartworms:
Revolution - Selamectin - 8 wks of age 
Advantage Multi for Cats - earliest age to apply - 9 wks,
must weigh 2 pounds Contains imidacloprid, moxidectin
ORAL MEDICATION:
Capstar - kills fleas immediately but short duration.
Can give daily or weekly to get under control, then recommend monthly topical.
4 weeks of age to start
and at least 2 pounds Contains nitenpyram

FLEA AND TICK PREVENTION FOR DOGS:
Flea preventives come in both oral and topical
forms.
Tick preventives are only in topical forms. Best applied monthly.
Tick season starts in March and increases through July and then tapers off.
If not using preventives monthly year round, should start applying in March.
Among other diseases,
ticks carry Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Lyme Disease,
both of which can affect people.
Minimum age and weight to start listed.
There are 4 common species of ticks.
Revolution only controls one species.
ALWAYS READ INSERTS BEFORE USE
TOPICAL FLEA PREVENTIVES:
Apply to skin. Do not bathe 3 days before or after.
Advantage II: imidacloprid, pyriproxyfen: 7 weeks. applied monthly. Fleas and lice
Advantage Multi: imidacloprid, moxidectin: 7 wks, 3 pounds. applied monthly.
Prevents fleas, heartworms, roundworms, hookworms and whipworms
ORAL FLEA PREVENTIVES: Given Monthly
Comfortis: spinosad. kills fleas. 14 weeks.
Sentinel Flavor tabs: milbemycin oxime: 4 weeks, 2 pounds.
Sterilizes fleas but does not kill. Fleas cannot reproduce.
Prevents heartworms, roundworms, hookworms and whipworms
Trifexis: Contains spinosad and milbemycin. 4 weeks of age, 5 pounds.
Kills fleas, prevents heartworms, controls roundworms,
hookworms, whipworms
ORAL FLEA PREVENTIVE: Given Daily, as needed:
Capstar: nitenpyran, 4 weeks, 2 pounds. Kills fleas quickly.
SHORT DURATION TOPICAL
FLEA & TICK PREVENTIVES: applied Monthly
Frontline Plus: fipronil, (s)-methoprene. 8 weeks. 
Controls fleas, ticks, sarcoptic
mange and biting lice.
Ticks may take 1 - 5 days to die after biting dog.
K9 Advantix:
imidacloprid, permethrin: 7 weeks:
fleas, ticks, mosquitoes and biting lice.
Caution in pets with liver/kidney disease or on seizure meds.
Revolution: selamectin; 6 weeks. 
Fleas, brown dog tick, heartworms, ear mites and scabies
PREVENTIC TICK COLLARS:
Contain amitraz. Puppies must be at least 12 weeks old to wear. Effective for 90 days.
Caution on debilitated, aged, medicated, pregnant or nursing animals.
Keep out of reach of children.
Wash hands after applying to pet.
